8 Self Care Ideas To Beat the Winter Blues

8 Self Care Ideas To Beat the Winter Blues

It’s not uncommon to feel a little down in winter, especially during January and February. After all, we do have blue Monday to contend with! After the furore of Christmas dissipates, we’re left counting down the days until the clocks change again (and for the end-of-January pay day to come around!) It’s easy to lack motivation or feel a little glum after overindulging during the festivities, which is why we think it’s more important than ever to make time for yourself during these early months of the year.

We believe that life is all about the little things - that’s why we filled our shop with beautiful products to make people smile! To help banish the winter blues, we thought we’d share a few of our favourite things to do that simply make us feel happy and help us to clear our minds. Read our self care ideas for a healthier and happier version of you this year. Go on, you deserve it!

8 Self Care Activities to Banish Those Winter Blues

1. Light candles

When it comes to candles, the Danes are on to something. In true Hygge-style, they’re known to fill their homes with the warm glow of candlelight during the winter months. In fact, according to the European Candle Association (yes, it’s real!), our Danish friends burn more candles per head than any other country in Europe. Candles evoke warmth, intimacy and cosiness. Plus, they fill our homes with uplifting aromas. Personally, we adore Paddywax’s soothing scents.

    2. Read a good book

Getting lost in a good novel means escaping to another world, era or country - it’s one of the best ways to switch off and unplug. Equally, dedicating a few hours to fantastic self care books like 100 Days Happier and 101 Things To Do When You’re Not Playing On Your Phone is a great way to get your mojo back during the winter months.

      3. Take a long, hot bath

A pamper session is one of our favourite self care activities, but it’s something most of us rarely get around to! Run yourself a hot bath, light a few candles and breathe. A truly relaxing bath time isn’t complete without some gorgeous smelling skin care, either. We love waking up our tired skin with Nathalie Bond Organics’ stress-busting Peppermint and Eucalyptus Body Scrub, followed by Magic Organic Apothecary’s Hello Sunshine Energising Body Oil. If we can’t guarantee sunshine in January, we can definitely pretend with this lovely stuff!

      4. Declutter a room

Decluttering is great for your home (making plenty of space for new trends and treats) and for the mind. Somehow, sorting, clearing and chucking leaves you feeling refreshed and organised. Trust us, it’s worth the task!

      5. Cook something new

Maybe part of the winter blues comes from being stuck in routine. Let’s face it, it’s hard to get excited about going out midweek when it’s dark by 4.30pm! Cooking something new for dinner is a great way to shake things up and stick to those healthy New Year’s resolutions. You could even try Veganism and become a vegan with How To Go Vegan book.

      6. Do some adult colouring

Don’t knock it until you’ve tried it! Colouring within the predefined lines of an adult colouring book is therapeutic and relaxing. The perfect self care activity to beat stress and switch off.

      7. Make a plan

January often feels like a bit of a drag because we’ve not got anything to look forward to. There’s a solution to that (and it’s quite obvious!) Make plans - big or small, create things to look forward to in the short term. The Do One Thing Every Day That Inspires You Journal is another fun way to refuel your creative spirit and make tracks towards those dreams.

      8. Buy fresh flowers

There’s really nothing like filling your home with fresh, colourful blooms, especially in winter. If we can’t grow them outdoors, we can definitely bring them indoors!

With hectic lives, constantly buzzing smartphones and gloomy winter weather, it can feel like we’re just trying to survive until summer comes around. But, there’s lots to love about winter and it all starts with making time for you and some frequent doses of self care.

      Happy relaxing!
