Everyone’s heard of Valentine’s Day, the international day of love, red roses and wining and dining your other half. But, what about Galentine’s Day? We think this day dedicated to our best female friends deserves some more airtime! The concept was born by Amy Poehler’s character Leslie Knope in US TV show Parks & Recreation back in 2010. It was dubbed a day for ‘ladies celebrating ladies’ and falls the day before Valentine’s, on February 13th, so you don’t have to miss out on being smitten with your significant other. What could be more fun than getting your girls together and celebrating your fabulous friendships? There’s no better year to start taking part than 2018 - this year marks 100 years since women gained the right to vote in Britain.
If you’re fed up with the teddies and pink chocs, Galentine’s Day is the perfect antidote. On that note, you might like our tongue-in-cheek cards for your partners this Valentine’s - less mush, more real life romance! In all seriousness, we know that we should all show our other halves and besties our love everyday of the year, but let’s be honest, sometimes we need a little reminder! Take a look at our list of fun Galentine’s ideas and gifts to celebrate your girl squad and have a whole lot of fun.
Ideas for a great Galentine’s Day party with your girls
Throw a Galentine’s get-together
Galentine’s day is all about getting the squad together and having a laugh. Stay in, take selfies, decorate cupcakes and put on your favourite films. You could even throw a fabulous dinner party where each invitee contributes to a course, or enjoy a pamper evening together. Though, one of our favourite ideas has to be a midweek brunch. This year, Pancake Day and Galentine’s Day fall on the same date – don’t despair, we can still enjoy the best of both! Why not bring one of the best weekend activities forward and enjoy stacks of brunch-style pancakes and mimosas on a Tuesday evening?
If you’re inviting everyone to yours, you’re going to need some supplies. We love Meri Meri’s cute garlands and balloons to show your love for your sisters. And don’t forget the cocktail making ingredients!
Spoil your gals
Other half or no other half, let your friends know you’re thinking of them. Everyone deserves to be spoiled! And we know what our best pals really want. Why not make up a gift box for each of your Galentine’s party guests? We’ll be treating our girls to a Keith Brymer Jones ‘gorgeous’ mug, so they have a little reminder of how fab they are, every single morning! If you’re looking for table settings with a twist, Acorn & Will’s enamel earrings and pins are ideal. From hearts to llamas and cacti, there’s something to suit each of your friends’ personalities.
Inspire Each Other
Share the love. Laughter is the best medicine, that’s why we feel so great after a few hours spent giggling with our friends. Make your Galentine’s Day even more uplifting with a pinch of inspiration and a dose of empowerment. Pour over Otegha Uwagba’s ‘Little Black Book. A Toolkit for Working Women’ together and read hard-won career insights from inspirational creative women. Or, each write an inspirational quote or piece of advice on one of ban.do’s compliment cards and swap them – they’re the perfect mini pieces of motivation to read in hard times and will remind you that your sisters always have your back.
Galentine’s Day is a chance to let loose and be plain silly – after all, there’s no one else who gets you like these girls! Whatever you decide to do, don’t miss out on celebrating your female friendships and injecting some girl power into your life.
